I need help with diamond selection and I’m looking for a diamond that would preferably be:
Carat: 1.1
Cut: Ideal/Excellent
Color: D-J
Clarity: VVS1 – SI1
Could you make me a suggestion? I guess with this kind of budget I’m going to need to compromise on finding an eyeclean stone of lower clarity and some acceptable level of color..
Hi Tim,
I think your budget provides plenty of flexibility in the H/I color range. All of these options have optimal proportions that qualify as GIA Ex/AGS 0 Ideal. You can get some nice 1.1ct I diamonds for less than 6k. Below 6500, you can either go up to a 1.2ct I or a 1.1ct H.

Hi Tim, I like this diamond. I ran a custom query for G+ SI1+ diamonds > 6.5mm in diameter and I think your choice is the best one I saw. The black crystal on the edge can be hidden under a prong, but I don’t even think that’s necessary. In real size terms, I think it’s about 0.08mm or 80 microns across, less than the width of a human hair, so it will be eye-clean. As for the natural, it appears to be on the girdle and I also think it will be fine. It won’t impact the diamond visually or structurally. This diamond has optimal proportions. With a 54% table, 33 crown angle, and 41.2 pavilion angle, it’s well in the middle of GIA Ex and AGS 0 Ideal. Best, Joe
Thanks Joe, I’m a little scared she’ll be able to tell the color when I set it on white gold so I opted to go back to G and a lower carat. What do you think of this one from your screener? https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD00079989 It has a noticeable black inclusion near the edge, is this something I can hide? Also is the natural near the edge not a good idea? Tim
