I wanted to ask Joe and the community here whether blue is really that bad. Given that natural blue diamonds are extremely rare, a slight blue hue would seem like a positive given association with a more expensive product. Furthermore, color is already hardly detectable on near colorless grades (say H or higher), particularly from above. Am I missing anything?
Here’s the color hue order I prefer: None > Yellow > Blue > Brown
None is something like a D/E that doesn’t show any hue. Lab diamonds are man-made. They’re not subject to the whims of natural diamond formation, so why not get one that was grown to be colorless?
Yellow hues look most like the typical natural diamond.
Natural blue hues are extremely rare, so a blue diamond is a giveaway that it’s a lab diamond, especially if you’re not the type that would spend an enormous sum on a fancy blue diamond. So to me it’s not an association with a more expensive product, it’s highlighting that it’s a less expensive lab diamond. Nothing wrong with that, but I think it raises an unnecessary question when other options are available, unless you specifically like blue diamonds. I do prefer blue over brown though.
Brown hues are less desirable and cheaper for naturals, so I see no reason to get a brown lab diamond.
