Hi Joe, I enjoy your website and articles, thank you for your assistance thus far. I note you mentioned with oval diamonds the colour grading becomes even more important then compared to a round shape. I’m a little confused on the table and depth percentages however as your recommended proportions differ to those recommended by the gem society? What is the ideal cut for a 2 c oval diamond? I’m looking at the below and would appreciate your opinion: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/2.01-carat-d-color-vs1-clarity-sku-8963814 https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/2.21-carat-e-color-vs1-clarity-sku-9184439 https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/2.01-carat-e-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-9205955 https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/2.01-carat-d-color-vs2-clarity-sku-8541318 Or any other recommendations advice? Much appreciate your help. Best regards, Billy
For the table/depth, what gem society are you referring to?
My table and depth recommendations try to prevent you from buying carats you won’t see. The third option (2.01 E VVS2) is no longer showing up, so I’ll just refer to your other three options. The 2.21 E VS1 is 10×7.26mm ($28000). The 2.01 D VS1 is 9.99×7.3mm ($22480) and the 2.01 D VS2 is 10.06×7.26mm ($21330). They’re all the same size, despite the 0.2ct difference because the 2.21 E VS1 is deeper with a depth of 64.6%. Carats are the primary factor determining price, so it’s not worth paying that extra money.
As for the diamonds, I think the 2.21 E VS1 is showing a little more bow-tie and the 2.01 D VS2 shows the fuzzy strain from the internal grain lines (the faint lines you see on the facets). So my pick would be the 2.01 D VS1. Those black crystals under the table are 0.10mm in real size terms, less than the width of a human hair, so will be eye-clean.
There’s also the 2.01 E VS2 below. The feathers are white, not black. It looks a little shinier to me, but it’s a little more expensive.

If your current choices meet your criteria, I don’t see a need to go further and spend up to your max budget.
Many thanks Joe for your help. I have acquired The diamond you suggested.
Hi Joe,
Thank you for your promt response.
I have a budget of $45k AUD, i thouht the D grade colour would be the best option with little bow tie. What is your preference of a diamond with this budget?
