Hi! I bought a diamond that was listed on your Diamond Prices page as an “AGS Ideal” diamond on the efficient frontier. It seemed to be a good value so I bought it. However, the Diamond was graded by IGI. I’m worried that I actually made a mistake because of their shoddy reputation. Can you help me?
Hi Matt,
I conducted a study of [dual-certified IGI and GIA diamonds](https://www.diamondscreener.com/education/comparing-diamond-certification-labs-gia-vs-igi-grading-and-prices/) and found that their grading standards were comparable. The evidence suggests IGI is fine, contrary to the hearsay found on other sites.
At $6500, I think this diamond would be a fair price. It has optimal proportions. I also think it would be eye-clean because the inclusions are about 0.07mm in width (measure the width of the inclusion and the diameter of the diamond on your monitor, divide the two, and multiply by the diameter of the diamond in mm). It’s certainly better than the other SI1’s that are available at the same price.
However, you can render all of this moot with a GIA 1.12ct H VVS1 for essentially the same price. You’d just have to switch to Blue Nile instead of James Allen with the option below. Alternatively, there is a GIA 1.12ct H VS1 at JA, but it’s getting closer to 7k.
Best,
Joe
