Thanks so much for this website, tools, and guidance! Love it!
I don’t have much experience with diamonds, and want to get a pair of 2ct (each) lab grown diamonds for earring studs. I really like square shapes, but not sure how to pick between them. Purely based on shape, I like the Asscher cut the best because it feels more modern and sleek, but I feel like it may not sparkle as much as cushion for example? Most princesses I’ve seen do look a bit like “crushed ice” as you say. I’d love your advice on which square shape tend to look the best in person between princess, cushion, Asscher, Emerald, and Radiant – assuming similar quality and specs. Also, do some of these cuts tend to be more expensive?
Emerald and radiant are rectangular, so if you want square I would skip those two shapes. Princess and cushion will look more similar – it will be whether you like the more random crushed ice appearance and rounded corners of cushions vs. the more regular faceting and sharp corners of the princess. Asscher is very different – I don’t think you’ll be able to appreciate the hall of mirrors effect in an earring the same way you would a ring. There isn’t a significant variation in price between the square shapes at 2ct (though rectangular emeralds and radiants tend to be a bit cheaper on a $/ct basis due to the higher yield cutting that shape).
Options 2 and 3 aren’t color matched. So of these three options, I’d go with option 1.
Unfortunately one of those of option 1 diamonds is gone already. It seems like I’ll have to compromise on some things because there isn’t a perfect match on all dimensions. Any advice on what is the least important dimension that the two stones can vary on:
– Color (sounds like a ‘no’ from your previous response)
– Clarity
– Depth
– Table
– Gridle thickness
Any inputs would be super helpful!
Another one is HPHT vs CVD. I was only looking at HPHT…
Clarification: I meant to ask not only what the two stones can vary on without it looking much different, and also which on the dimensions can be generally relaxed to increase my options (e.g. is it worse to compromise on table or depth?)
Thanks again!
Thank you! I decided to still go with Asscher cut after looking at more examples. I also decided to go up in size to 3.00-3.50 carat each.
I would be very appreciative for your help picking between a few options:
