I have been doing quite a bit of reading about the 4C’s and stumbled upon diamondscreener a few weeks ago, and I really appreciate what you have done with this website. I am torn between going for a diamond that is literally 0.2-0.3mm smaller (~0.9) than an average 1 carat (~6.4mm) round diamond, or even slightly larger, if the diamond is closer to the efficiency frontier, is the extra cash worth the 0.2mm? I have been torn between opt’ing for an I color versus H or G as well. I can tell the difference on the Bluenile 360 view of the diamond (of course they are magnified significantly), and 99% of the internet says you will not be able to see a difference unless compared to another diamond, and you won’t be able to see it naturally while in the setting (looking at going for platinum).
For instance, I have found several diamonds that I have liked, but I am not 100% sure on what I really “want” to spend, or should spend, and what I will likely not notice between the different diamonds in person.

I also wanted to ask if there are more historical pricing charts available. I was curious to see what the prices have looked like over the past year up to 5-10 years potentially, more for my curiosity as to potentially identifying times during the year when prices are lower or higher.
Hi Chris,
- I would skip the 1.07 I SI1 – its clarity is based on clouds not shown so it has reduced transparency.
- I think the 0.96 H VS2 will be eye-clean. That crystal is 0.07mm in real size terms, less than the width of a human hair.
- I think the 1.00 I VS1 is a slightly brown I. I might skip that one too.
- The 0.97 H VS1 looks good.
- The 0.90 F VS1 looks good.
- The 1.00 F VS1 looks good, but I might skip it because it’s so much more expensive than the other options.
So of the three that remain, I might go with the 0.9 F VS1. It’s the cheapest and the difference in diameters between it and the 0.96 and 0,97 is small, 0.13mm and 0.17mm for $500 and $1000, respectively. The 0.96 and 0.97 also go down in color, which doesn’t seem worth it.
You might compare it to the 1.00 F SI1 below. It’s the same price as the 0.97 H, but at least it hits 1ct and doesn’t drop in color. I think the inclusion at 5 o’clock could be hidden under a prong.
Best,
Joe
